Leader Persuasion - 1290 Words

How persuasive can one be, how much power can one achieve with words? Successful leaders of different time periods and different categories possess the ability to use words effectively to lead through the power of persuasion. Whether in a Business, political, or religious leadership positions, successful leaders utilize and capitalize on the needs and wants of their followers through persuasive word choice High level persons are persuasive; they have to be. Powerful speakers such as Adolf Hitler, Martin Luther King, Jr., and President Barack Obama all have something in common; they all have spoken and appealed to mass audiences using similar speaking techniques. Many of the speaking techniques utilized by these highly influential†¦show more content†¦King appealed to his followers through personalization, utilizing words such as self-sufficient, independent, and unique. He appealed to one’s self-perception and identity. Brain based research has shown that this t ype of personalization through the use of the word â€Å"you† activates attention in the brain where individuals make judgements about themselves and others related to personal qualities. King made people want to posses the same personal qualities. With a further analysis of Martin Luther King Jr.’s â€Å"I have a dream speech†, which was delivered in front of the Lincoln Memorial. In the second paragraph King starts off with â€Å"Five score years ago...† referring to Lincolns famous Gettysburg Address which began â€Å"Four score and seven years ago†. King uses a technique called â€Å"anaphora† which is the process of repeating words at the beginning of neighboring clauses. When repeating words it sets a pattern, with further repetition it emphasizes the pattern even more which increases the rhetorical effect. Emphasis through repetition makes phrases more memorable, and, by extension, make King’s story more memorable. Ano ther thing King did was to repeat the key theme, King’s most frequent word he used was â€Å"freedom† which was said twenty times. This would make sense because freedom is the primary theme of the speech.
